NaNoWriMo | An Introduction & Days 1 + 2

Welcome to the start of NaNoWriMo!

Ah, November. To most, it’s the month when shops start playing their relentless Christmas playlists and the air is rich with aromas of cinnamon and clove.

Not to a writer. November is the start of NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month, a month long challenge to write 50,000 words of a novel of your choice. What novel you write doesn’t matter, nor does how you write it. What does matter, is that almighty word count. The quality of the writing is not the focus; oh no, it is purely the quantity.

And that, fellow bloggers, is what I’ll be doing this month. Battling a daily word goal in hope of achieving that final 50k.

Instead of posting daily videos on my YouTube channel on how my progress is going, I thought I would write bi-weekly blog posts updating you all!

Last year’s NaNoWriMo was a success – I reached 50,000 words, but just barely. By the end of the month, I hated my novel. I seriously did – I have not touched it since, nor do I think that I’ll ever go back to it. When you run an idea to the ground so much, you suck it dry. I forced 50,000 words out of a half-loved idea last year and so this time round, I wanted to prepare weeks before. I wanted to find my ideal novel – the novel I didn’t just want to write, but to read also. What book would I want to read?

So, I thought about it, and then when 1st November hit, I began writing it.

One weekend down and 5000 words later, I have already reached my word goal for this weekend plus Monday. I feel like a writer– for the first time ever. I’ve found a novel that I really love writing – and the feeling is amazing.

I’m not going to go into the plot just yet, as it’s still very early days, but if people are interested enough, I’ll probably write another post introducing you all to my characters.

If you’re doing NaNoWriMo, I hope your first writing weekender was as productive as mine and that you’re excited about the month ahead. If this is your first year doing NaNoWriMo, do check out my video giving you some crucial tips and tricks!

Fingers crossed that by the end of this week, I’ll be ahead of my word count goal – and still enjoying writing!
